FedEx ID scanning will soon impact all shippers. On June 28, 2022, FedEx express and ground will enable ID scanning functionality for domestic deliveries which require an adult signature. FedEx’s ID scanning technology will electronically capture the recipient’s name and automate age verification. This new process removes the need for manual data entry of recipient information and improves the accuracy of recipient information.

FedEx ID scanning might be a leap forward for automation, efficiency, and cost savings, but many consumers might not be so quick to accept this new policy. If FedEx only records the data outlined below, the possibility of data misuse is low. But, data compromisation is always possible, and identity theft does give people pause.
What data will FedEx collect with each ID scan?
- FedEx will only record the first initial and last name on the ID.
- Currently, this is part of the existing proof of delivery information captured for all signature deliveries.
- FedEx will not record or store other personal data encoded within a recipient’s ID.
- (e.g., driver’s license number, birth date, home address, picture)
What if the recipient does not want their ID scanned at delivery?
When the recipient refuses to have their ID scanned at delivery, the driver can verify age by manually entering the date of birth. The driver will also manually enter the first initial and last name.
According to some FedEx drivers, manual entry is not optimal. Manual data entry will lower the number of drops per hour. FedEx drivers can manually enter the birth date, but an increase in usage might create higher signature fees in the future.
If a recipient does not have a driver’s license, what other forms of ID are acceptable?
The following forms of ID will be valid for FedEx ID scanning:
- U.S. driver license
- U.S. Passport (only available for FedEx Ground deliveries)
- U.S. state ID
- U.S. military ID
Does the name/address on the shipping label have to match the name/address on the recipient’s ID?
No. A recipient’s scan is only used to verify that the individual accepting the adult signature required for delivery is 21 years old or older.
FedEx Delivery Attempts
If a shipment requires an indirect, direct, or adult signature, but no one is there to sign for the delivery, a FedEx driver will leave a door tag. A driver can place the shipment at the recipient’s door when no signature is required. But, if a signature is required, the driver will generally try to deliver the package up to three times.
